Colloidal oatmeal is produced by using special rollers to pulverize the oats, extracting the oat flour and causing it to become a colloid which means that the tiny particles of grain spread throughout the water and permanently change the consistency of that medium. Thus, the oatmeal particles do not sink to the bottom of the bathtub. It is very difficult to get the oatmeal fine enough by just grinding it in a home blender.
Colloidal oatmeal has traditionally been used to soothe and soften dry skin and may help to relieve itchy rashes and skin conditions such as chickenpox and shingles. Eczema (dry skin patches) as well skin as conditions such as insect bites, sores, and other minor skin irritations may respond well to colloidal oatmeal bath treatments.
