Lanolin is a by product of the wool trade, it is a natural secretion from the glands of sheep, primarily used to 'waterproof' the wool. It is chemically a wax instead of a fat; it contains about 25 to 30 percent water. A water-absorbing base material and a natural emulsifier, therefore it absorbs and holds water to the skin. Lanolin has a wide range of applications because of it's compatibility with a broad range of ingredients. It lubricates, protects and soothes the skin without unpleasant stickiness and is extremely effective in preventing water loss from the hair and skin, and also may possibly retard the fine wrinkles of aging.
Lanolin is useful in salves and ointments, as well as having functional attributes as a epidermal moisturizer, lubricant and emollient moisturizer making it useful in lipsticks, liquid powders, mascaras, nail polish removers, protective oils, rouges, eye shadows, foundation creams, foundation cake makeup, hair conditioners, eye creams, cold creams, and brilliantine hairdressings. Lanolin is known to relieve chapped and cracked hands, diaper rash, minor burns, windburns and minor skin abrasions.
