Diatomaceous Earth
Diatomaceous Earth is a sedimentary material formed by the accumulation of skeletal portions of microscopic plants called diatoms. These shells are permeated by pores forming a lace-like structure that makes them a natural filteration aid which is used in the beverage industry to filter wine, beer and fruit juices and in water filtration systems. Diatomaceous earth absorbs 2 - 2.5 times it's weight in water, but does not readily absorb moisture from the air.
The Diatomaceous Earth powder that Well, Naturally carries is non calcined, and has a crystalline silica content of less than half a percent. It is sourced from diatoms, one celled creatures that live in water. The obvious difference between the calcined and non calcined type is that the calcined type is heated to high temperatures, changing the structure of the particle, which causes an increase in the crystalline silica, which has proven to be cancer causing when inhaled.
Diatomaceous earth is used as a natural flea powder. It will tear the carapace on a flea, but is totally safe for the animal. Its also used as a body wrap for humans, the theory being that it draws toxins out of the pores.
