Bentonite Clay is a pale grey to buff coloured powder that was formed by the alteration of volcanic glass to clay minerals which are less than .005mm in size. It consists of hydrous aluminum silicates plus iron oxide and magnesium oxide with either sodium or calcium oxides. It can absorb 40 - 50 times its weight and swell to form gel-like masses.
Clay is often used for drawing poulices and for easing sprains, bruises, poison oak, insect bits, in perspiration absorbing foot powders, and in exfoliating and detoxifying face masks. Most types of clay are drying because of their absorbent qualities so are recommended for normal to oily skin only. Bentonite clay is also used in shaving soap to provide slip.
Sodium bentonite type clay is used to seal dams, bond foundry sands, asbestos and wool; in drilling muds, concrete, ceramics, emulsions, insecticides, pharmceuticals, paints, manufacture of paper; clarifying water, juices and liquors, and as a water softener to remove calcium from hard water.
Calcium bentonite type clay is non swelling and break down to fine granular absorbent clay sometimes called fuller's earth. Fuller's earth is using in scouring wool.
