Candelilla Wax is a hard, yellowish to tan wax obtained from the stems of the shrub, Euphoribia Ceriferna, found in arid areas of Northern Mexico. It is less hard than carnuba wax has many uses including cosmetics, chewing gum, polishes, pharmaceuticals, precision casting and candles to name a few. The excellent oil retention qualities of candelilla wax make it particulary useful to improve the stability and texture of cosmetic products such as lipsticks, lip balms, mascaras and is often used as an extender in formulas that contain other more expensive waxes.
Candelilla wax (GRAS) is used as a food additive in soft candies, chocolate, as a coating on vegetables, and as a mold release agent in industrial baking.
Candelilla wax may cause adbominal discomfort if ingested in large amounts but is non-irritating to the eyes on direct contact, is not expected to cause skin irritation, and is not known to present an inhalation hazard. However, caution must be used when working with the hot melted wax as it can cause burns.
