Calamine Powder USP is an odourless flesh pink powder produced by combining zinc oxide with approximately 5% ferric oxide. It is chemically stable but incompatible with chlorinated rubber, magnesium and linseed oil. Calamine Powder is used to make calamine lotion as well as being included in some creams, washes and ointments as a skin protectant and for the treatment of skin diseases. Acute exposure to calamine powder may cause possible irritation to skin, eyes or mucous membranes so rubber gloves, a suitable dust mask and eye protection are recommended.
Calamine relieves itching by producing what is called a counter-irritation. As calamine evaporates from the skin, it produces a cooling effect. This cooling effect helps to divert your body's attention away from itching which can be caused by physical irritation or chemical changes in the skin due to disease, allergy, inflammation, side-effects of drugs, reaction to irritant substances, eczema, infection with lice or worms, insect bites and stings, psoriasis, nettle rash, chicken pox, measles, jaundice or scabies. Due to this cooling effect it is also effective for the relief of sunburn. The zinc oxide has antiseptic properties and may help to prevent infection through scratching.
