Baking Soda (Sodium bicarbonate) has many uses from cleaning products, to baking to making the fizz in bath bombs. Its odour-absorbing properties make it a useful ingredient in deodorizing products. Baking soda has abrasive qualities, is a mild base (alkali) and thus a pH adjuster and buffering which can neutralize many acidic solutions and make extremely basic solutions less so.
This alkaline property of baking soda gives it properties similar to soap when dissolved in water and it is added to the laundry as a cleaning booster as it can help to remove grease and dirt. Some people who react to laundry detergents use baking soda as a substitute. Baking soda's abrasive qualities make it a good additive for toothpastes to clean the teeth without damaging the enamel or as a mild exfoliant for the skin. It may also be used for cleaning countertops and sinks.
Baking soda has long been known as an odour absorbing substance. Since it is a pH balancer it acts to bring odours produced by acids and bases into a more neutral state and it is used in many commercial products such as toothpastes, bad breath lozenges and gums, and underarm and foot deodorants. An open box in the refrigerator and freezer help to keep them smelling fresh.
Baking soda added to baths may help to relieve itching from sunburn and minor rashes but since it is a salty compound, it may sting if applied to raw or tender skin.
