German Chamomile essential oil Matricaria chamomilla/M. recutita - A smooth, apple-scented, erect annual; 6-36 inches. Linear leaves are finely divided; somewhat more coarse and less scented than a nobilis. Native to Europe and north and west Asia; naturalized in North America and Australia. It is cultivated extensively, especially in Hungary and eastern Europe, where the oil is produced. It is no longer grown in Germany, despite the herbal name.
Treats diarrhea, sciatica, gout, flu, and is a digestive and sleep aid. Relieves colds, asthma, fever, colic, gallstones, headaches, muscle cramps, tonic, spasms, constipation, pain and increased appetite. German chamomile is said to be effective in the treatment of rheumatism and arthritis. Flowers were a folk remedy for cancer. Used in pharmaceutical antiseptic ointments and in carminative, antispasmodic and tonic preparations. Extensively used in cosmetics, soaps, detergents, high-class perfumes, hair and bath products. Used as a flavor ingredient in most major food categories, including alcoholic and soft drinks.
