Canadian white-cedarleaf (Thuja occidentalis) is also called eastern white-cedar, northern white cedar, arborvitae, and swamp-cedar. The name arborvitae or "tree of life" dates from the 16th century when the French explorer Cartier learned from the Indians how to use the tree's foliage to treat scurvy. A small to medium-sized tree shaped like an arrowhead - a pyramid with a broad base and a small, round top, often with several main trunks. small-sized, averaging 12 m (40 ft) high, evergreen. The essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs. The color is colorless to pale greenish yellow and the odor is intensely sharp, fresh, camphor woody. White-cedar essential oil is said to allay rheumatism, treat warts and have antibacterialproperties. Rich in vitamin C, cedar is also used as ahepatic and blood draining agent, in addition to helping treat certain sexually transmitted viruses. In the American Pharmaceutical Codex, it is recommended for gout, fever, menstrual pain and intestinal worms
