Cedar Moss Absolute Evernia furfuracea thrives on the bark of firs and pines and is commonly called Tree Moss. When dried and stored for a period of time, these lichens develop a peculiar mossy, earthy odour, the carriers of which can be extracted with solvents, yielding the so-called resinoids. Odoriferous substances occur in the lichens in such small amounts that they cannot be isolated by steam distillation; therefore, extraction with volatile solvents must be used. Although primarily a perfumery trade product, it is indicated as being antiseptic, demulcent and expectorant. Both Victoria Edwards and Jeanne Rose suggest that it could possibly be useful for sinus congestion. There is stronger evidence for its use as an aphrodisiac in cases of impotence and frigidity. Also it is considered to be balancing, calming and grounding and some suggest that it is used ritually to visualize money.
