Angelica root essential oil (angelica archangelica) is produced from a tall hairy, biennial plant, growing up to 8ft high, common in southern England, Hungary and many areas of Europe. The essential oils are steam distilled from both the seeds and the rhizomes, the yield is very low, making this oil a little more pricy than most. Angelica is often used to flavor many alcoholic drinks such as cointreau and its candied stem has long been used in confectionery. Angelica root oil is rich peppery and earthy with a herbaceous/earthy middle note and a spicy finish.
